Sarah
2008 Brashear High School Graduate
2008 UPMC Scholar of The Pittsburgh Promise
"I think The Pittsburgh Promise is the best thing ever," says Sarah Walsh, a 2008 graduate of Pittsburgh Brashear High School and UPMC Scholar of The Pittsburgh Promise. "The Pittsburgh Promise allowed me to go to the college of my choice right out of high school." As Sarah and her family were weighing their options for college, the cost factor made the choice of 4 year private school prohibitive. By November of her senior year, Sarah was leaning toward attending a community college for two years and then transferring as a junior to the 4 year school of her choice, Robert Morris University (RMU).
In early December of 2007 the announcement was made that UPMC had wonderfully pledged $100 million dollars to The Pittsburgh Promise and the 2008 graduating class would be eligible for the first Promise Scholarships. That announcement changed everything for Sarah. With a Promise Scholarship in hand, Sarah applied and was accepted to Robert Morris University.
Sarah is completing her junior year as a business major with a 3.16 GPA. As a result of learning effective time management skills, Sarah is thriving academically and enjoying several extracurricular activities. One of her favorite things about college; Sarah says, "I have met some very cool people."
There are 107 UPMC Scholars of The Pittsburgh Promise at RMU. As part of the first class of Promise Scholars at RMU, Sarah says the group developed such a strong sense of community with each other they decided to create an official student organization called The Pittsburgh Promise Cohort. Sarah says, "This organization has provided incoming Promise freshmen with mentors who will support them socially and academically in order to help better their college experience. We are very excited about this organization because we know what college is like and we want to share these experiences with incoming freshmen who also will receive The Pittsburgh Promise. As a group we feel that we can really make a difference in mentoring these new students because we all have one thing in common: We are all from Pittsburgh and attended the Pittsburgh Public Schools." Thank you Sarah for Keeping The Promise.
